about

It all started with a dream... a dream that would soon be squashed without mercy. That dream was : Halley and the Skamets.
In 1996, Justin Witman, Matt Halley, and Ben James formed Halley and the Skamets in the form of 2 guitarists playing over a lonely drummer. Soon, Alex Montgomery signed on to fill out the low end and give Ben some company in the rhythm section. There was one problem, however. How could they call themselves a ska band without a horn section??? The hunt was on for top notch tooters. Luckily for them (and the future of ska) Justin and Matt just so happened to attend a prestigious upper-middle class preparatory school in Devon, Pennsylvania. There they met Frank Lunkwitz, a tenor saxophone specialist. Justin gave Frank a basement tape between classes, and he joined before lunch started! (Even though after listening to the demo, Frank told Justin that he "hated all forms of ska", and probably still does...)

Hold on a minute! It turns out a happenin' ska scene was blossoming right in their own backyards! A local band by the name of 5 Point 0 had being setting stages on fire across West Chester, and all those nubile ska kids were frothing at the mouth for more. They played their way through a healthy cast of characters, including Douglas Scherbak, who originally auditioned to play guitar, but someone told Doug that Justin hated him or something, so he gave up. They then acquired Less Than Phil on baritone sax, but he ended up being replaced by Doug, who had been playing sax for years. Mary Schmidt played sax for a while, and the horn section was solidified when Toby Segal joined on trumpet. They had semi-regular gigs at the West Chester YWCA and the old Gay St. Fennario's playing with various local bands, and the word spread fast.

It was a magical time when ska kids and punks would line up around the block just to shuffle into a hotbox and scream "THAT'S THE WAY THINGS ARE"...just because it felt good. When it came time to record, seven members were left standing. In 1999, they ventured west into rural Pennsylvania and found Jim Moblie at IQ studios. The result was 10 tracks of pure ska genious. It rocked, it rolled, it dipped, it dropped, it bounced, it threw you through the fucking windshield. Ben James' kinetic dumming is matched only by Alex's robot fingers. The songs are crafted brilliantly and can catch even the most critical ear. Unfortunately, soon after the record was completed, Ben and Toby left to pursue scholastic enhancement and the band found themselves "assed out". Enter Alex's longtime friend Joe Brown, who just so happened to be one of the sickest drummers in the area. He stepped up with a hardcore backbone made of solid rock and injected the band with some BALLS. An eight year veteran of trumpet named Craig Lough showed up and played Super Nintendo at practice, and the band was complete once again. They were kicking ass, growing as a band, and growing hair in places where there wasn't hair before.
...and then Matt was absent, and the band argued, and Alex quit and Joe left with Alex, and they all peed their pants and the band was gone.

Six years later they are all still jerks, some of them got fatter and some of them got married, some got drunk and some got the gay. They're not all friends anymore, and many of them even talk to each other, but it sure was one wild ride for some kids from West Chester. We will forever be bound by those crazy days of Lucky # 7.
